Great Video Barry!
I think Thunderbolt will go the way of Firewire someday.....be replaced with something else. Hmmmm...maybe USB 4.0 or 5.0?
Gorgeous woodworks
Am using the Motu 828
SM Pro audio way long ago had such separate units, but nobody was a dealer for SM Pro audio state side.
This is a great idea. Looking for some specs on the SW page or Arturia page and not finding it. Specifically input levels on the IN unit, like, can I crank my mic pre where it really needs to be +19db, or what is the latency spec on the converter. Like the rme stuff say .1ms vs and apollo at say 1ms. I'm surprised they don't show those specs. The woodworking stuff is super cool!
Virtual instruments eat Apple Silicon alive. Then you're glad you have DSP for your effects.
Not my Mac. I have videos running hundreds of them at a 64 buffer no problem.
@@BarryJohns Well, I'd be surprised to hear if they are CPU-intensive virtual instruments like Omnisphere, EastWest sample libraries, etc... because they are HUNGRY, in my experience. Plus SSL360, AudioMovers ListenTo, etc... all running? Anxious to hear your take.
Will the X8 Out work as a headphone amp?
Still love your channel and approach, Barry! 🙏🏻
So good, as long as the cost is not outrageous.
Drum mic’ing shootout: Barry Johns vs Glyn Johns! 😂 j/k
I’ll take that challenge for sure. As long as the judges don’t have a clue who was involved. He was great for the time, but that would never pass today as a mainstream way of doing it. That style would be buried in today 100+ tracks. Jazz band, acoustic trio, sure, dense mix, no way. Remember he had to deal with track limitations, so it’s more of a necessary evil. Also, remember the eagles dumped him because you couldn’t hear the drums. Also, the most important part of a drum recording is the room. It’s all about the room for drums. I’m sorry, and I have no idea if this is accurate or not, but you’re coming across as your hearing will only what you want to hear, and not what was actually said.
@@BarryJohns it was mostly just a Johns vs Johns joke and the plethora of RUclips gear “shootouts”. Of course the answer is always try a bunch of stuff and do what you like best!
Hey Barry can we have the link to that spinning table thingy you got there?
I think I got it from B&H photo,
@@BarryJohns thank man!
Question can you daisy chain them? Say I get 2 X8 INS, well I only see ADAT outs on the unit.. Am I missing something here?
You do not Daisy chain out. So the quantity of expansion is dependent upon the number of Adat IO on your interface.
Holy shit! I have the Audiofuse Studio, and I just added the 16Rig some months ago. Now I can add those additional outs! 🎉 I was just complaining to a friend about those old Aphex 141 units not being available anymore, and not being sure if I can trust buying a used one. Problem SOLVED! 😁
How would using an Arturia AudioFuse X8 in differ from say using an ART MX822 Stereo Rackmount mixer? I recently purchased an Arturia 16rig and an MioXL. I am currently waiting for Sweetwater to get a shipment of the MX822’s in on back order. However, perhaps I should wait for the X8 in?
The ART is simply a mixer, it doesn not add up to your recording interface. Two completely different units for different purposes.
@@BarryJohns Oh I see, thanks
Thank you for teaching me what you know. I love your authenticity and sincerity.
Curious obsession is my thing. Pure childish brute force is my magic. Steady pressure over the course of time moves mountains. It is by will alone I set my mind in motion… ❤️
interesting idea
I think so too!
I have the Black Lion Audio - Revolution EXP, which is ADAT to 8 in/8out for about $799. Works great and has the better clocking ability. I love that other firms are coming out with functional gear.
Black lion Audio certainly makes very good products, they are outstanding company! Pricewise it’s comparable if you buy an X8 in and an X8 out. But what if you only need one of those units?
Spot on assessment 😀
When are these coming out? Can't see them anywhere
zzounds has them.
Today is the release date.
Would be handy for the audient Oria... was thinking about the SSL Pure Drive preamps for just ADAT ins but it doesn't quite fit the budget
Did you test it with totalmixfx?
I will be doing a full review a bit later, this one is just letting people know about the new release and the possibilities of it. I’ll be testing with my RME as well as a 4 IO Audient interface. Stand by for that.
Barry, I always love your videos. You're knowledgeable, informative, skilled, and interesting. I am very much like you. Been around a while in terms of age and have been in this space since my early teens. I thoroughly enjoy your channel. Thanks for the great work and content.
Liked also the "Ring preserver" preset for Snare. With some of the other presets the snare went completely silent occasionally on non-triggered blast beats recorded with SM57.
Spot on Barry, and encouraging! I’ve always said if you want to excel at anything your first requirement is “passion”. And where’s the 1-800 NUMBER? 🤣
Awesomeness ❤
Never be as smart as Barry,s awesome
Yes you will, keep at it!
Barry right on Brother feel exactly the same❤ way
A two cents : I don't think the problem is with the musicians, because there are plenty very good keyboardists, bassists, guitarists, etc, around. I think it's that somehow the industry has formularized everything. You reference the Rolling Stones, and The Beatles, but those guys wrote a variety of styles, and experimented with a variety of chords, subjects, and key modulation. Today, it seems that there are actually policies regarding the chord structure of songs, and surveys and polls about what songs the listeners will listen to. In short, nothing seems to be in favor of freedom in songwriting. I hope I'm wrong, but this is the way it seems to me. I don't think it's about the skill or lack thereof, of the musicians, but the song quality. The people who don't seem to realize that the music of Beethoven, Bach, Chopin, and Mozart, has survived for centuries, are the same ones who claim the music of the 60s, 70s, and 80s, is old, and they are the ones who are feeding us the crap we hear today. They are the gatekeepers of popular music. They destroyed the concepts of signing artists for longer terms, trusting artists with their creativity, and true artistic development. If it goes on like this, THEY will probably tell artists to write songs with certain specific chord structures, and keys. Or maybe the geniuses will distill their, "golden formula", down one chord per song. Not just, "Write a song in the key of D", but, write a song using just one chord.
All that said I don’t want to spend more than $3000 total I have the drums I have the mics I do not have the doll computer or interface
If you were a drummer and you want to record yourself in the basement, what would you use?
I am and am in the middle of trying to setup recording for fun and practice. I got an Avid Studio Interface and a Pro Tools Studio DAW. I got a Yamaha EAD10 as well. That said, I’m beginning to desire mic’ing my kit, so bout a Behringer ADA8200 ADAT to add 8 mic inputs to my Interface. Haven’t gotten the mic kit yet though. Am deciding between a Shure DMK57-52 or Audix DP Plus kit. Hope that helps, but as Barry said, there’s a lot of questions that could change any or all of what I’ve shared. Good luck!
OK put another way. I am a newbie at recording I research the audience auto gain. I am a drummer that just wants to do tracking in his basement. I do not have a computer. What do you recommend? Everybody says get a Mac I want to be able to record drum tracks and email them back-and-forth, give me some guidelines please
OK, then put your money where your mouth is. How do I build a computer so I can record my drums on an audient eight channel interface I want to use pro logic daw and is a Homebuilt one better than just getting a Mac, which is what everybody tells me to do
Well like I said in the video, research how to build a computer, tons of great videos for that. If you want to use Logic, it’s Mac only. A Mac Mini Pro is a good choice, that said, they are due for a revision soon. This would be a good option that will give you 16 mic preamps. www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/EVO16PreRckBun--audient-evo-16-usb-audio-interface-16-preamp-rackmount-bundle.
Oh, I have links in my video description to Sweetwater, if you use that, I get a tiny percentage…..
@@BarryJohns thank you for your response. That’s exactly what I was looking at having your opinion means a lot thanks again.
Thank You! Very good explanation!
Thanks!
It's all you can do really... otherwise you're just a sales person rather than someone passing on the ability to learn and do
I was basically born in a studio! My dad took my brother and I to rehearsals and recording sessions when we were babies. Pure luck!!
What I want to know Barry is what you're rocking for listening to music, what kind of stereo equipment are you using, etc. Are you a turntable guy or a deck guy?
I just picked up a universal audio arrow for $200 mint condition. Now I gotta buy a 2015 MacBook pro 🤣🤣🤣
Yes! So True! Thx Barry
Where can we hear some of your recordings?
From SM57 perspective, a microphone of course. After already having a $300-500 microphone, no need to update, probably ever. Update your room and fix the acoustics, this brings something real. I have U87 and NT1, I could easily use them both takes on the same song without anyone noticing it, or even I knowing where the cuts were after a week of doing something else. After you already have a $300-500 microphone, it is not the microphone, it is the talent, or the room, or the lack of knowledge.
Pretty much, although just for one or two of my mics, I'd raise the budget a little higher, to maybe 800. Especially if thinking of things like ribbon mics, where even those designed to be more affordable than most (Beyerdynamic M160, or Royer R10). And maybe for the main lead vocal mic, I do slighly prefer less bright sounding / vintage voiced mics around 800, like the JZ Vintage 67, Chandler TG Type L or Soyuz 1973 more than good 300-500 mics say, like an Austrian Audio OC16/OC18, or Sony C-80. NT1 is a genuinely good mic though, no doubt about that. I like the Sennheiser MK4 too, and above the Austrian Audios, the old Audio Technica 4050, and some of the Lauten mics too.
I really enjoy your videos, Barry.
I was recording my songs on a Panasonic RX-CS700 when I was like 6-7 years old. I've been doing this practically my entire life.
Acknowledged & Appreciated.
I'm starting to HATE total mix. It's overly complicated and not "intuitive" at all. Sounds good, very capable but you waste to much time figuring things out especially when adding new gear.
If you spend the time and watch all four of my videos, you will clearly understand it. This is the last video in that series, I stress that it’s important to go back and watch each one in order to build a foundation. I simplify it in a way that RME never done.
@@BarryJohns yes, I watched them! It’s a much better explanation than RME’s channel. I was connecting the tegler cream rc and it seems like what was happening was using the pipeline plug-in, was interfering with the Tegler plug-in and causing too much latency or something. it was also trying to blend the dry and wet signals, which I didn’t want, but I got it routed properly. I bypassed the pipeline XT and went straight into the main for the master bus compressor and plug-in. I’ll have to bounce to new track and not render but it’s working fine, took a while, but I got it going thanks!….and I saved the snapshots and mixer layout to easily recall or input the tegeler when I start mixing.
I'd like to hear you discuss some ongoing challenges. For me, I am concerned about my ears as I age. Do you think about that? Sometimes I just want to tune out all the horrible noises in my environment (work, in public). I'm starting to think church is too loud. Do you think trying to mix music makes a person less tolerant of harsh sounds, or am I just getting old? Keep up the good work.
This entire video is so useful not only for our music careers but just in life in general. Thank you, Uncle Barry, for your wisdom and your kind words. Keep doing what you’re doing because you’re doing it right. Can’t wait for the furniture!
Nailed it !!
